happy potter
the party was fun, busy, crowded, and i didn’t get any butter beer. we are just going to have to make our own. that will be fun.
i guess there were so many people that the police had to turn people away. every news station was there. people were dressed all weird and it was simply crowded. that’s all.

so, were there any evil wizards and witches? do you now know about the fire you've been playing with?
sorry. people who don't know what they're talking about annoy me. anyway.
party sounds cool. i agree with n0sh-- real shame we don't have anything like that here. but our bookstores all stayed open late and had midnight parties. I, alas, was far too busy to attend.
Posted by: streu on June 22, 2003 06:18 AMDear Mrs. Angel,
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Ned. I am friends with Christian and Ann. I have heard many nice things about you.
I attended the event that concerns you, namely the City of Oak Park release party for the newest Harry Potter book. Far from being a locale of depravity, Oak Park has a charming downtown area with lovely buildings and cute little shops. People were very nice.
The attendees to the party seemed to be comprised of grandparents, mothers, and fathers with their children, and small groups of young adult/preteen girls. People in costume were either dressed like cartoon wizards and witches, or like British children from a private school.
The event was, in fact, a celebration of literacy and imagination. After we have heard for decades that young people don't read, we see children who not only want to read, but they are excited about reading! As the H.P. series progresses, the books push the young readers through more difficult reading levels--and the kids don't seem to mind. In fact, based on the large turn-out, they seem to enjoy it.
At the event, there were no pagans or satanists in attendance passing out flyers to tempt people to the dark side. There were no blood-letting rituals in the park. The police presence was there for safety reasons, and it was a fun family event of a scope that any school system could never have organized.
It was due to the imagination of JK Rowling, along with her writing skills, and the strength and compassion of her characters who struggle against evil and wickedness using the tools of friendship, resourcefulness, hard work, and many other admirable traits I would wish my children to emulate.
Here is a web address from Christianity Today International that may give you some further information about the Harry Potter phenomenon, and the reaction of at least some of the Evangelical community:

Your daughter and her husband are good people, and I am grateful to be friends with them. You should be proud.

Posted by: nna on June 22, 2003 11:19 AMwell, i wouldn't want to be too hard on a mother who ended up with you as a daughter and xian as a son-in-law.
