Consumption weekend! Books, Movies & Food.
In chronological order.
Read Mona Lisa Overdrive last week. My first time through it. I was really impressed with the way Gibson weaves stories. MLO is actually three stories told in chapter by chapter parallel. I should read it again reading each story separately. And see how the effect changes.
We watched Zoolander (IMDb:Trailer). And it was beautiful. Quite possibly the funniest movie I’ve seen in the past year. And good for a weekend of quotes. “That Hansel, he’s so hot right now!”
Friday, we took a field trip to Schaumburg. We found a park. A park the size of a small city. A park with wandering roads, wandering rivers, and wondering paths. In which, we wandered. And I found a large dead tree that was over the water. I pranced around on said tree. I did not fall in. We then took off to finally meet a MINI. We set off down auto dealer lane. Michael spotted one. It was not the MINI Dealer, but a used car place that had one. We got out to look at it anyway. While we were gawking, we we approached by an under-informed, condescending used car salesman. He was determined to convince us that the MINI was out of our league, and that he had other “affordable” cars to show us. We decided that it would be eaiser to just leave than try to make sense of why his used MINI sells for $14,000 more than a brand new one. We did find the real MINI dealership. And it was filled with nice people, free literature, stickers. And the coolest cars I have ever seen. Michael and I have both decided to each get a MINI COOPER S, in electric blue. He will name his “Blue Steel” and mine will be “Magnum”. MINI MINI MINI.
We dined at Fuddruckers. Fuddruckers pretentiously claims to serve the worlds best hamburgers. They are probably right. We spent our post enormous hamburger digestion period pawing through MINI Literature and quoting features to each other. “Flat tire monitor. Alerts the driver the moment a tire’s revolution rate changes, indicating tire integrity has been compromised.” “…Dynamic Stability Control vigilantly monitors steering angle, yaw and lateral acceleration. If it senses your MINI is moving in a direction other than what you intended, it applies the brakes at individual wheels and manipulates engine torque to put you back on the right path.” Sweet.
Another stop at the mall where Ann spent her birthday bonus on a cool new purse creature at the Fossil Store, and where Michael and I made up lame excuses to distract her so I could buy her the Moulin Rouge DVD as a birthday present.
Happy birthday Ann! (she is now even more older than me :-) We, of course watched Moulin Rouge (IMDb:Trailers) It is still very very good.
Michael took us out to see Ice Age (IMDb:Trailers) We laughed, we cried. It moved us Bob.
And today I read The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy a wholly remarkable book. Written by Douglas Adams, based (in a round about way) on his radio series of the same name. In which the earth is destroyed, suspense is avoided, improbability happens, petunias think, and panicking is not advised. At the center of the story is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the most remarkable book to ever come out of the publishing empire of Ursa Minor. A book almost, but not quite, entirely unlike the book in which it is contained. If you haven’t yet. I suggest you read it.
