Silly tim.

So Tim was all like "Dude where's my blog?"

So I'm like, "Dude. You don't got a blog."

So he was all "Woahhh..." and then "Right." and then "Well, Can I have a blog?"

And I'm all "Well, I don't see why not."

And he's like "Can I have a blog with an @ in the address?"

And I'm all "Well, I don't see why not." and then I gave him this.

So then Tim's voice from the future came to me in a glancing at his unpublished blog entries, and it spake unto me saying "WANTED weird pictures of Xian"

And I'm all "Well, I don't see why not." So here you go Tim. And just for the record. No. It's not like that.

The tape-leg was cool man.

Um... The system was down. Yo.

News worthy.

It seems they are shutting down all of the Wal-Marts and K-Marts in Iraq. Yep. They are turning them all into Targets.

Cue cheesy drum roll.

A gift of prints.

Ned alerts us to the MoMA's magnificent Artist of Brücke exhibit. I'm sure he didn't know it but expressionist prints are one of my weaknesses. Thank you Ned! Thank you Ned!

The non-car car show tech.

If you want to know about the cars at the car show check out Michael (he's got pictures) or Darren (he's got michigan attitude). There are all kinds of incredible things they are doing with the show itself these days. Some of my favorites:

byabigtruck.jpg Innovative - Dodge - Instant Photos: The Dodge booth was giving away free photos at different places around their booth. Now free photos are nothing special but the tech behind it is quite cool. The photo attendants have a stock digital camera on top of a mono-pod. Also attached to the pod is a small computer with a barcode scanner. They take your picture, pull a card out of their pocket, scan the barcode on the card and give you the card. The picture is then transfered via Wi Fi to a computer somewhere in the dodge booth where it is processed and uploaded to dodge.com instantly. All you have to do is enter the ID # on your card to retrieve your picture. Very cool. That's me standing next to the RAMINATOR which Duane says is a truck but I think is really just an elaborate self-propelled trampoline.

minipinball.jpg Fun - MINI - Pinball: The MINI booth despite being directly across from Ferrari and Maserati booths held it's own with pride, silliness and a lot of fun. Including a few extra large electronic pinball machines. Get the bonuses and they pause the game to teach you about the car's features. I totally cleaned up. There's me playing, dad watching and Pilgrim playing his own game. Thanks to michael for the picture.

Amusing - BMW - Broken touch screen display: There were touch screen displays and web kiosks every where. But upstairs in the BMW booth someone had gotten one of the touch screens out of it's DVD mode and had uninstalled the windows driver for the touch screen. Resulting in a very useless display. Silly windows. Even Janie knows better than that. :)

Other things include: Infrared transmitters that would beam car information to your palm pilot. Cars strapped to machines that spun them upside down for no reason other than to draw attention. Poorly marked restrooms. Expensive cars that you couldn't even get close to. Engine models that opened up while moving to let you see what was going on. And many many shiny things.

It's not that funny.

It is rather hard to show your wife a web page when she is laughing uncontrollably at this.

Display spanning for iBooks.

Out of the box the Apple iBook supports display mirroring but not the infinitely more useful display spanning. But they have found a hack (and related discussion) to enable sweet sweet display spanning. Well not my iBook. My iBook has a puny video card. But Shaun's iBook could do it. [via:Rael]

Bins of freshly cut leaves are rushed from nearby farms to the packing plant in refrigerated trucks. Then the bins are lifted into a vacuum tube the diameter of a subway tunnel.

This goes out to Ann. She has a salad fetish :)

iTrip. uTrip. etc.

My CD player in my car is dead.

I want an iPod.

Two unrelated statements. Enter the iTrip. Now these statements are quite related and I really really want an iPod.

Free money.

The RIIA is on trial for price fixing and if they are found guilty they must pay retribution to all members of the settlement group. And you probably are a member:

You are a member of the Settlement Group if you are a person (or entity) in the United States or its Territories and Possessions who purchased prerecorded Music Products, consisting of compact discs, cassettes and vinyl albums, from one or more retailers during the period January 1, 1995, through December 22, 2000.

All you have to do is fill out a quick form at musiccdsettlement.com. It is quite painless and only take about 3 minutes. But hurry, the deadline is march 3. Be sure to spread the word.

Writing for fun profit.

For those of you who don't know. I am in the running for the senior designer position for Guideposts for Teens magazine. I will find out if I have the position or not "soon". In the meantime the editorial department of that same magazine is hiring me to write a mini-column on technology/gadgets. Given my aversion to it for most of my life getting paid to write is something quite new for me. Not that I'm complaining. I like getting paid. :) And now I have a good excuse for all the time I spend reading Slashdot and Gizmodo. Not to mention the scores of techblogs I read.

At least I have cheese.

I'm in the middle of a game of VGA Planets. For those of you who don't know VGAP is a multiplayer, turn based, play over email, galaxy conquest game. You can find out more than you'd ever want to know about it at Donovan's. Anyway, I found out today that my latest turn didn't go through. Again. I know I sent it 7 hours before the turn deadline. But still, when I loaded the new turn none of my little green dots representing spaceships had moved. Of course normally when you miss a turn you get a nice bonus of two turns worth of taxes. But I was over taxing my homeworld last turn and now they are mad at me because my turn that fixed it didn't go through. Which is not cool. The galaxy is way harder to conquer with angry stationary dots. Even if they are green. I've had this problem before. Turns not going through, or my turns getting there 30mins after the host compiles. So I even gave the host a mintchaos.com email account so he wouldn't have to leach off of his wife's work/university account. Which started a whole slew of unnecessary hassles that are now fixed and I'm still missing turns! Of course it doesn't help that I'm using an unsupported beta java VGAP client program that is written in such a way that it requires Java 1.4.1 which is still a developer's preview release from Apple.

So I'm using an unsupported preview version of a program interpreter to run a beta version of an un supported game client on a platform that it has never been tested with and sending my turns to the only person in the world who doesn't get my emails within 5 minutes regardless of the account he is using.

Well, I guess I really shouldn't be surprised that it breaks. But dammit it sucks when my dots don't move. Bah! Well, at least I have cheese. We had our crazy extended family christmas gift exchange today and I ended up with a four pound wheel of baby swiss. There is something reassuring about a huge chunk of cheese.

Superplexus's daddy.

A big thanks to to Hazel who left a comment pointing to this article about Michael McGinnis the creator of the superplexus

Michael McGinnis - Creator of the superplexus."Trying to get the game on the market was like a wild roller-coaster ride," McGinnis says. "It was just crazy. By the time it finally made it into the stores, I was so worn out by the entire process that I didn't even have any of that jump-up-and-down excitement left in me. I just felt relieved."

He's been working on it for 23 years and he only get 33¢ per Superplexus sold. Which hardly seems fair. But I congratulate him. Incredible work.

The incredible shrinking GameBoy.

GameBoy Advance SP Nintendo is releasing the GBA SP which featuring a smaller screen protecting clam shell design, a lith-ion battery and a lit screen. It's available now in japan and will start selling in the US march 23. Read the GameSpy Review for full details. All I can say is. "Darn you Nintendo, I'm still trying to save up for a GameCube. Slow down already." Thanks to Jake for the heads up.

Update: Penny Arcade does the GBA SP

Holy Mona Lisa Overdrive Batman.

William Gibson has a blog.

The post-holiday doldrums.

Christmas was wonderful. I had a loverly pre-Christmas one year anniversary party with Ann. During which expensive chocolate and good wine were consumed. We then spent a week at Ann's parents. Gifts were opened. Mine included: The Beatle's Hard Day's Night DVD; Beautiful! A sweater; Being worn now. A SuperPlexus; One of the coolest most addictive toys ever. OK Go's new album; Which does not disappoint. And Metriod Prime For the GameCube; But not a GameCube. Go figure. Many games were played, Dominoes, Uno, Dominoes, SkipBo, Dominoes, more SkipBo, and the ever popular Dominoes counting down from 15 using only prime numbered doubles. Bed times were ignored.

New years was faboo and featured friends, fun, food, fireworks and fondue!

But that is now over. And real life doesn't have nearly as many gifts or alliterations as the holidays. There is much work to be done. Although it remains to be seen if I'll actually get any of it done tomorrow.
