LaunchBar2: The rip-off.

If you use OS X you should already be using LaunchBar. If you aren’t yet, start now. LaunchBar is one of the best things to ever happen to the computer interface. It’s completly transparent, there when you need it, not when you don’t. It is endlessly useful. And sadly it has been completly ripped off by an unbelievably arrogant little company called CandyLabs.

A tip: If you’re going to copy something for a different platform don’t pretend you thought it up.

Chris Clark has a full write up and has been emailing back and forth with the CandyLabs people.

A week's worth of Apple links.

Ok, Here we go. Last week I wrote about Apple’s design getting ripped off. Specifically mentioning the dellPod. John Gruber picked up the ball with a point by point discussion of why Dell does not have an iPod killer on their hands. It’s really amazing that the iPod has been out for as long as it has and no one has been able to touch it yet. However if you haven’t been able to touch one yet either you can print this out and fold it up. What it lacks in functionality it makes up in style. Also Apple music related:

  • iTunes for windows is set to launch tomorrow. This is a very big deal. Also rumored to be announced tomorrow are new accessories for the iPod, a microphone for voice memos and a image card reader for digital photos.
  • The new iPod TV ads are out featuring the new neon silhouette style. I think I like them better moving that I do in the print ads.
  • Ovolab has released RemoteTunes. Control your iTunes remotely with an iTunes like interface.

Pirates of the comments - 3.

Ok, did a little searching into the phenomona that is Ann’s POTC post. As it turns out, Ann’s posts in of the first page of Google results for Captain Jack Sparrow and on third page for Jack Sparrow. But that’s nothing. She is the number one Google result for all of the following phrases:

And for a really good time, try correcting them on their spelling or point out that Jack Sparrow is a fictional character. Mandy tried it I don’t think she’ll ever hear the end of it.

Pirates of the comments – 2.

Ann’s post about The Pirates of the Caribbean now has an impressive 119 comments. And they show no signs of slowing. Check it out if you have a great need to witness masses of girls aruging about whose hotter, Jack vs. Will, Jack vs. Barbossa, they’ve even brought up Malfoy from the Harry Potter movies. You can also find links to pirate costumes, the entire script, 50 year old women, a link to an online POTC roleplaying game and some guy named Steve with an unhealthy Barbossa obsession.

Wacky.

LinkDumps, Photoshop, Apple and LiveJournal. Oh my!

First the quick bits.

Michael — Apparently getting a driver’s license was really bad for Michael’s blogging habits. So in case you were wondering, here’s the lowdown his recent actions. Since successfully obtaining highly advanced photographic equipment he has been busy using it. Like this and like that. He is also building a new website for his photos and a new redo of his blog to go with it. Word is that there is even a new domain name involved. He dosn’t want to blog again til he gets it done. In the meantime he has gone and got him a LiveJournal with the sole purpose of making fun of LiveJournal. Silly Boy.

Photoshop — Adobe announced Photoshop 8 this week. Only problem is something went screwy in the naming department and they are calling it Photoshop CS The CS stands for Creative Suite. Todd Dominey weighs in on the name in his peice Dead End Naming Conventions. DPReview has posted an in-depth review of Photoshop CS’s new features and why this release was made with digital photographers in mind. Also of note is that Photoshop CS is Adobe’s first product with required activation. Within 30 days of installing it you must electronically activate your copy of Photoshop with Adobe. This will link your photoshop to your particular computer. This is only necessary in Windows versions of the software. In section 2.4 the EULA for Photoshop 7 (PDF link) it states that you are allowed to install the same copy of photoshop onto your desktop and your laptop computer. It will be interesting if this gets removed from Photoshop 8’s EULA because of the activation. I’m just going to call it Photoshop 8, if for no other reason than this way I’ll know what I’m talking about.

Apple — When it comes to consumer technology innovation there is Apple, and there is everyone who does whatever Apple just did that worked. Which is to say, there is pretty much just Apple. Steven Frank wrote up a nice little rant about in in response to a press release from Dell announcing their new iPod wannabe the Dell DJ, and the new iTunes Music Store… no sorry, the new Dell Music Store that “allows seamless, legal downloading of songs to the Dell DJ.” Good for them. Then of course there is L, or go-L or Liebermann Inc. or whatever they are actually called, who has ripped off Apple’s website their product lines and even their product names. What the heck is a Cinerama anyway? What amazing innovations do they bring to the table you ask? Well, they cut their logos on their machines out of actual rocks. Really. Rocks. And not just any kind of rocks all kinds of rocks. They also have a menubar on their website that doesn’t link to their pages properly anywhere except the home page. That’s kinda innovative. This cartoon from The Joy of Tech really puts in all in perspective. If it doesn’t make sense to you, you might not know that Apple has so many rumor sites that that now that have rumor site parodies.

wasting time — While writing thing entry I scored 910 and completed 6 tables in RSVP. Whoot!

Ok. That should do me for a few days. ;-) Now I can go to bed.
