Am I allowed to turn the TV on in order to turn it back off again? Seems a shame to not be able to participate in such a fine even because my TV is already off.

That's always been my problem too. In the spirit of sacrifice, it hardly seems one to cut out TV watching, when I don't do in the first place.

The internet isn't really a vice for me either, as I work on it 9+ hours a day. When I come home, I'm generally sick of the whole deal.

Perhaps I should observe a Book-Close Week. Now THAT would be a test of will. Or perhaps a Get to Bed at a Reasonable Hour Week...
