Speakings

Frankly, I sometimes truly despise this world. I am not a strong advocate one way or another towards the particular political arguments regarding the war. I just hate the fact that yet again another time is approaching when our world will have to endure war – along with all its hate, killing, and dissent. I am sorry that I have to live at a time where I see these things, and I pray that it will be over as quickly as it starts. I am also sad that our Nation has failed to work within the democratic bounds it established – an utter diplomatic failure. Some of my hope in this world rests in the idea that our governments can work together, and recent events seem to me to be otherwise. I don’t know all the arguments flying back and forth, I haven’t watched one newscast, and I have talked to maybe 5 other Americans about it. All I know is what I read in the news, and I pray that whatever happens is in God’s hands and that He will benevolently intercede for those who are innocent and caught in the fatalities of war.

My friend is a HS teacher of media studies. She is covering media sources published from several countries. Information about what is going on is conflicting. How do we really know what's going on? Rumor has it that important information key weapons were left out with the United Nations. Supposedly someone held their tongue before the UN cast their vote in the direction to give Saddam more time to disarm. -- Rumor also has it that France and Germany are benefiting economically by selling weapons to Iraq. Why do they really oppose the war? For peace or other reasons? I am not trying to say that we may not have our own ugly agenda, but we're not the only bad big brother. -- How extensive are the tortures in Iraq? I don't know. -- Whoever approved Bush using the word "thug" in his speech of 48 hours left needs to be fired ;P

When he said "thug" he was reffering to terrorists. I would agree with him that they really are "thugs" with absolutely no regard for human life.

Have you read Kurt Vonnegut's book, Cat's Cradle?

The book tells, among other things, of a pretty practical religion called Bokannonism. The old guy invents words for various phenomena.
One of the words is translated as
"...the state of a great nation when it is in the hands of a fog-bound child."

Another guy named M. Gandhi tells us,
"Throughout history, tyrants rise. But they always fall. Remember that. Always."

Thanks for the comments Michael. I also read your weblog yesterday and I do think that we have to have a certain level of trust in our leaders. Frankly, I'm torn over the entire situation, which preys on my tendency to idealise the ideas democracy and diplomacy as well as my disguist with, as the Japanese coin it, "Terrorist Machines" - thugs. I haven't seen our leaders make a solid (or semi-solid) connection between Iraq and the terrorist problems. I do think that the Iraq situation needs to be handled, quickly and firmly, but my wish is for this to be done through the UN. However, I was thinking about it yesterday - regarding WHO has failed in this diplomatic situation - and perhaps the UN was the first to fail. Action should have been taken years ago. Pressure should have been maintained on Iraq to rid it's weapons and reform its government. But the UN security council seemed to have a difficult time doing this. Is the US really failing diplomatically, or are they not allowing themselves to be sucked under by a failing organization?

This is really a sensitive subject for most people, and as always opinions are not without bias. What you are thinking of is I think the train of thought that our president is taking. The issue with Iraq is now 12 years old. I think that terrorism is not really the only or biggest issue in this conflict. It is a big part in that we know that Iraq has harbored and trained terrorists and that the Iraqi government has excercised terrorism on its own people. This is the same kind of thing that Hitler did in nazi Germany. In addition to all this there is belief and as our government says, proof, that Iraq has in possesion weapons of mass destruction as well as chemical weapons. If this is true than Iraq has been lying to us for these 12 years. I think these are the reasons we are going to war. We did offer Huissein a chance though. He turned it down.

I guess that because of my age and because I don't have much expierience on the road of life that my opinion might very easily be the wrong. I, like the rest of you am very confused on the inside about all this. I guess the reason that I post these comments and entries is that I have alot of pent-up emotions that I feel I need to let out. I'm glad that we are all thinking this through and evaluating things for ourselves. The road to understanding is wrought with many troughs and peaks. But unfortunatley we usually learn far more from the troughs than the peaks.

sure is hard to believe you used to hang out with my little brother! Keep using your noggin!!! You read my train of thought well.....

as far as what we know about the "terrorism" to the Iraqi people, it's one big news-interpreted, mangled mess. Such mess is what has landed in mind, so sometimes I too have to just write a little rant. :)

While not directly related to the comments here. I think it is interesting to note something that has been overlooked by most people; it is not just this current administration that has given Iraq their last chance. The difference is that this administration gave an ultimatum AND is following through. Twelve years of diplomacy is more than anything I can think of has gotten.
