Greece plans continued

This is continued from my previous entry, so if you haven't read it yet, just scroll down a bit.

4.14...continued...Craig played all day while I was at the conference. There are a lot of very interesting presentations, and I will talk more about Ethicomp in a later post.

4.15...that would be today. I have more conference from dusk till dawn, and I presented my own research today. The presentation went really well and I was even invited to write additionally for special journal publication. Tonight we're having a conference dinner, and I can't see that going wrong since all the delicacies we've put in our mouths since we've gotten here have been spectacular.

4.16...end of the conference and travel back to Athens. From there we'll take a taxi to a place called Lavrion and get on a sailboat for our 4 day expedition through the Greek Islands.

4.17-19...continued sailing to only Homer knows where....

4.20...Back in Athens, we'll find something to do for the next day and a half. I want to go on a little hike - maybe we'll go to Mt. Olympus.

4.21...this is our last day in Greece, and we're going to fly to Frankfurt to meet my friends Stacy and Joel Johnson.

4.22...we'll be at the Johnson's, and probably travel to an old German city that actually still has walls around it. I went with Stacy last year, but it was a holiday and everything was closed (oops!), so I'm looking forwards to returning. I can't remember the name at all though, so I'll post that later.

4.23...we'll say goodbye to Stacy and Joel and head back to Kyoto. I guess we lose a lot of time, because we'll be arriving midday on the 24th.

Well, that's all for now. We're taking lots of pictures, and I'm sure it'll be quite a chore to sort through them all once we return.

Hello from Greece!

by a fountain in Athens

hello from Greece

I'm actually at a lunch break at Ethicomp 2004 now. It's great being at a computer related conference - we have high speed internet ports =). (Xian note the change in smiley). Everything's going just great so far. Here's what we've done/will do:

4.13...arrive at 2:45 in the morning, go through baggage claim and get on a bus. Go to central Athens and find our hostel just to cancel it because there's no point in paying 44 Euro just to sleep for 3 hours. They were super nice and didn't charge us (well hopefully so - I haven't checked my credit card yet). Then we walked around a darkened, quiet Athens, stopping at a cafe that was surprisingly busy for the time of day. Then we saw the Parthenon, walked around the markets for quite some time, searched in vain for a Starbucks that Craig swears he saw, and took a ferry to Syros, where my conference is being held. We arrived at the Helektra Hotel in the evening and practically passed out after over 48 hours of solid travel. It's a beautiful hotel - much nicer than I had expected. I think it's fairly new and it's extremely clean with great service. It's tucked away in an alleyway of Syros, away from loud noises and with a great view of the Aegean Sea.

4.14...Begin the conference. I was really nervous to meet everyone since I am the youngest person here, and it's my first time at a conference.

OK...........the conference is about to restart (we're on lunch now), so I'll write more later.
